New Polish State Award

In January 2017, on the initiative of Senator Prof. Jan Zaryn, the Polish Senate passed a law establishing a new state award, to be awarded by the President, called the Order of the Cross of the West. Currently, the law is being worked on in the Sejm, soon it will go to the President for signature. The aim of the Cross of the West award is to express the gratitude to foreign institutions and individuals who helped in Poland’s quest for independence and supported Poland between 1939 and 1989. Examples of such persons and institutions include New Zealand and Persian families providing help to refugee children of World War II, Canadian and South African airmen, as well as Protestant, Catholic, German, and French organizations supporting “Solidarity” in the 1980s. The Cross of the West will also be awarded to individuals posthumously. As a part of the historical policy of the Polish state, the Cross of the West award is intended to show gratitude towards those who provided aid in addition to sending a positive message about Poland’s history. Initially, Prof. Zaryn says, “we plan on rewarding people that are still alive, especially, but not only, from the “Solidarity” generation. We ask for your help in gathering information on such persons and institutions.”

Please send any information to Professor Żaryn via email (jzaryn@interia.pl or senator.zaryn@gmail.com) in addition to directing such requests to the nearest Polish diplomatic missions. According to the law, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will coordinate the procedure granting the Order of the Cross of the West and the Institute of National Remembrance will verify the information in the form of biographies or descriptions of the activities of the institutions.

Przykladami takich osob i instytucji moga byc rodziny nowozelandzkie i Persowue przyjmujący “dzieci tułacze” w czasie II wojny swiatowej, lotnicy Kanadyjczycy czy obywatele RPA, organizacje protestanckie i katolickie, niemieckie i francuskie wspierające “Solidarnosc” w latach 80-tych.

Ministerstwo Spraw Zagranicznych zgodnie z ustawą bedzie koordynować procedure nadawania orderu Krzyża Zachodniego, a Instytut Pamieci Narodowej bedzie weryfikować nadsyłane informacje w formie biogramów lub opisu działań instytucji.

Prof. Jan Żaryn, historyk, senator RP, redaktor naczelny miesięcznika “W Sieci Historii”.
